President & Chief Operating Officer

Michael Poole has accumulated nearly 37 years experience in the energy industry, most of which was spent working within the drilling services sector of the natural gas industry. He is nationally recognized as a leader in the contract drilling industry and in oil and natural gas exploration.

Mr. Poole's career tracks back to the domestic oil and gas industry's acceleration period in the 1970's when he was employed by Appalachian Drilling Inc. From 1980 through 1988 Mr. Poole held various positions for northeastern U.S. based contract drilling and exploration & production companies such as Miller Drilling Company, Merrill Natural Resources Inc, The Eastern Group and Trinity Oil and Gas Corporation. During this period Mr. Poole also served as an officer and principal of  United Energy Development Corporation and Sovereign Petroleum Associates Inc. In 1988, Mr. Poole accepted a position as Appalachian Region General Manager with Fuel Resources, Inc. (subsidiary of Brooklyn Union Gas Company). In 1994, he accepted a transfer to Houston, Texas where he served as Onshore Operations Manager for Fuel Resources Inc and its successor company (The Houston Exploration Company) until 1997.

In 1997 Mr. Poole became Vice President and General Manager of Union Drilling Division of Equitable Resources Inc. located in Buckhannon, West Virginia. Subsequently, in 1997, Mr. Poole led an investor group in the acquisition of the Union Drilling assets from Equitable. He was then elected Chief Operating Officer of the new operating company (Union Drilling, Inc.) a position he held for nine years. During that time, Mr. Poole led Union Drilling, Inc. through periods of significant growth from 12 operating rigs until it became the largest contract drilling enterprise in the eastern United States. Mr. Poole went on to steward Union Drilling's operations as the company grew to over 70 operating rigs, completed an Initial Public Offering and moved its headquarters to Fort Worth, Texas.

Mr. Poole joined Highlands Drilling, LLC in November, 2006 as President and Chief Operating Officer. In that position, he undertook the task of building Highlands into one of the most respected and profitable drilling companies in the Appalachian Basin. This was accomplished by combining unique purpose built equipment with carefully selected and subsequently trained personnel along with building unparalleled customer relationships and in depth understanding of customer needs and priorities. He has led Highlands from the day the Company deployed its very first rig to its current twelve rig count. In the process, Mr. Poole has built a culture of environmental excellence and commitment to the safety of its employees, customers, contractors and others who visit a Highlands work site. Indeed, in 2010, Highlands received certification for outstanding environmental, health and safety systems under ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001. Mr. Poole was a major design contributor to the SpeedStar 185-K rig and its larger version, the SpeedStar SS - 1100 rig.
